Regarding the watercolors...

My fascination with sea and sky at dawn began in Key West in the summer of 1994. each morning I hop on my bicycle when it is still dark, stopping for a con leche, with my supplies in tow...a watercolor block, a few brushes, a jar to collect water, sometimes a camera, sometimes a notebook. I choose the direction of my gaze, poised in anticipation for what always surprises. Beginning with the first signs of light in the sky, I watch the drama unfold ... more with awe than the purpose of making a picture. My brush follows the pathways of light and wind, the flight of birds, the shoreline in silhouette, like a great dragon....

Painting at dusk: the water is jewel-like. the birds are hunting. the fish jump like silver dollars thrown in arcs over the waves. After I swim, as the last light of day seeps from the sky into the sea, I paint. My soul unfolds. The actual work time is brief. Back to Home Page
